Picking Men’s Cologne

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

As ads on television, in magazines and all over billboards inform us, the market for men’s cologne is growing fast.  Formerly completed by a simple bottle of Aqua Velva or Old spice, the section reserved for men’s colognes is growing in every store across the nation.  When even Wal-Mart has dedicated an entire aisle section for a product, you know that its time has come.

Picking men’s cologne is a relatively simple process but requires some time and effort.  You can’t just pick up a bottle of spray off the shelf, sniff the sprayer and be done.  Every scent is different on each person.  The only way to know for sure if you like a scent is to try it, for at least thirty minutes.  When you first apply a scent all you smell are the high notes.  It takes some time for the medium and low notes to put in an appearance, and that is the part that will remain with you all day.  Also, there is nothing wrong with the scents you find at the supermarket, but if you want quality, you have to pay for it.

Plan to spend some time at the men’s cologne counter at your favorite department store.  Bring along a cup of coffee or a small bag with some coffee grounds.  Coffee helps clear out the scent receptors, letting you smell each new fragrance clearly.  Ask the counterperson to spray the colognes on cards, not on you.  After three or four scents you won’t have a clue which is which, cards eliminate confusion.  Smell a scent, sniff your coffee and repeat.  When you have narrowed down your choices to two or three fragrances, ask if the store is willing to provide some small samples.  Take the samples home and try them over a few days.

When you reach only one choice, go online and look to see if you can get a better deal.  Often department stores have a lot of overhead, and the prices reflect that situation.  Online suppliers have lower overhead and can sometimes offer discounts.  Once your new cologne arrives, you are ready to head out on the town.

Everything You Need to Know About Perfumes

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Perfume is now a fashion statement. Just like a fashionable handbag or nice shoos it gives your look a touch of extra elegance. The scent of a perfume depends on its individual components and the unique reaction that occurs when the floral interacts with your biochemistry. Because every woman and man biochemistry is different, and because their biochemistry changes as they matures, choosing the right perfume and cologne from samples can be more complicated than you might think. Men used odors to conceal body odor because they also like the light smells after a bath. You might be wondering what body parts would be the best place to apply floral on you.

A great place to test out a new fragrance is often on either on the wrists or in the inside part of your elbow. These areas of the body are the best locations to test out perfumes. Waiting for about an hour or so will give time for the fragrance to settle onto the skin, as well as gives your body the chance to react to the scent. Pheromones in women react differently to scents. Therefore, what can smell great on one woman may not be the right scent for another. For a romantic evening or a party, you can choose a completely different scent. Luxurious floral fragrances are just as suitable for the evening as they are for the day, and you can also wear something rich with woody or oriental notes.

Beware that brand perfume by itself is not considered a fragrance. There are style conscious men who wear perfume according to their moods. There are perfumes that go with their schedule, for instance corporate, semi-casual or casual perfumes. Some of the corporate brands of perfumes for men are Sean John, Armani, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Hugo Boss which are the most chosen perfumes internationally for corporate getup. While Armani has a few corporate fragrances with woody flavors, together with Calvin Klein perfumes are supposed to be most luring with a heavy masculine touch.

Next, there is actually a trick to smelling perfume. Have you ever noticed that when you smell perfume from the bottle and then you smell it on your wrist it does not ever smell the same? That’s because perfumes react with your body chemicals. So, you will want to purchase a perfume that is not only pleasing to the nose when you open the bottle, but one that is pleasing when it reacts to skin contact. Also, once you have applied the perfume to your wrist, wait a few seconds as the strong odor will dissipate and will leave you with the scent that the perfume is meant to provide.
