When cavemen were roaming this Earth, the ways of working were slightly different. Men would look good based on strength. Killing a bear, etc, were ways of showing that.
For woman the act of beautifying themselves has been known for centuries. In both cases the attraction between men and women came down to body chemistry which is what we now call pheromones. Pheromones are like an invisible link that makes us attracted to people.
Men and woman back then would not bathe, there was no need for perfume! However, as we became more civilized and realized the importance of bathing, we ultimately have much less pheromones on us during the day.
Luckily the change is better! The change to bathe allowed us to take away the sweaty stench! However, this change has meant a need for a better scent.
Gradually woman would start to rub themselves with leaves that were scented. This practice of working with scents continued and continues to this day, but today we call it perfume.
In the past people in the role of chemists would be involved in sourcing these essential oils, these oils were the predecessor of today’s perfumes. However, it could not stop there, there was a need for more convenience.
Let’s look at the word perfume and where it comes from. The root of the word perfume is ‘per fumum’ and comes from latin. We find that the skill of making perfume comes from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and other places.
The first bottled perfumes however came out in Europe in the late 1300’s. That is over 700 years ago! And was originally called ‘Hungarian Water’.
The French then came across perfume and the rest is history as they say. France has been big on perfume, and has been a central place that brought perfume into the mainstream.
Being a luxury item, perfume was originally only affordable by the rich. Gradually it changed where a point came where more and more people were wearing it.
Today we find many advancements. Though the principles of perfume making are the same. In essence the use of essential oils from nice plants and a alcohol base is still used to make perfume.
It is quite interesting seeing the changes. Many people don’t know the base ingredients and all perfume manufacturers keep the method secret, even though they may divulge the ingredients themselves.
